A former Dallas officer who says she fatally shot an unarmed black man in his own home after mistaking his apartment for her own made a series of “unreasonable errors” and worried more about how the incident would affect her than about the man she shot, a prosecutor said in opening statements of her murder trial Monday. Amber Guyger, who is white, is standing trial for the killing of year-old Botham Jean last year. Guyger was returning to the Dallas apartment complex where she lived in an apartment on a different floor from Jean after working a and-a-half-hour shift September 6, , a prosecutor said.
Guyger was off-duty but still in uniform when the shooting happened. She told investigators that she parked on the fourth floor of her apartment complex’s garage — rather than the third floor, where she lived — and found the apartment’s door ajar. Jean, an accountant from the Caribbean nation of St. Lucia, “was doing no harm to anyone, which was his way,” Dallas County Assistant District Attorney Jason Hermus said in an opening statement.
He noted that Jean was in his living room eating a bowl of vanilla ice cream when Guyger entered the apartment, which was one floor directly above her apartment. Hermus said Guyger called after shooting Jean, but on the call appeared to be more worried about herself than about the fatally wounded man. On the call, Guyger can be heard saying she shot a man because she thought he was in her apartment, and repeatedly says she’s going to lose her job.
The case has attracted intense national scrutiny for its strange circumstances and as one in a chain of shootings of black men by white police officers.

Historically, you could be lynched for anything. From to , more than 4, black men, women, and children were lynched by white mobs, according to the Equal Justice Initiative. Black people were shot, skinned, burned alive, bludgeoned, and hanged from trees. Lynchings were often conducted within sight of the institutions of justice, on the lawns of courthouses. Some historians say the violence against thousands of black people who were lynched after the Civil War is the precursor to the vigilante attacks and abusive police tactics still used against black people today, usually with impunity.
It came 10 weeks after the killing of Ahmaud Arbery, a year-old black man, who was chased down by a white father and son in a pickup truck as he jogged in his neighborhood in Glynn County, Georgia. Historians say the deaths seemed to rip the scab from years of oppression of black people.

It is alleged the man was a serving police officer when some of the offences were committed.
He resigned from the police force in May Police allege he met and attacked the women from to present, and detectives believe there may be more victims who have not come forward. Acting Inspector Simone Van Der Sluys said the man’s alleged offending was “abhorrent” and had been “distressing” for herself and her colleagues. Inspector Van Der Sluys said police executed search warrants at the man’s home and current workplace, uncovering videos of the alleged offending which in some instances included drugging and sexually assaulting women.
She said some victims in the videos had not yet been identified or spoken to by police and the investigation was still ongoing. It’s alleged the man used his position as a senior constable to intimidate his victims, and police believe this may have prevented some from reporting the abuse or coming forward. Inspector Van Der Sluys urged anyone who had information, or if they had been on dates with the man, had any sexual relationship with him, or had contacted him via dating apps, to contact police.
